Working Group C3 - EVERYONE IS AN ARTIST
Contemporary Art between Commercialisation and Communication

May 17 from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm
INDOK center

Sometimes it seems that art for art’s sake is being judged as elitist and exclusive. This is especially true for contemporary art which is deemed to be too intellectual. More and more we are forced to show the utilitarian and functional value of arts and culture. Economic or social effects are often desired and measured. Does that force the artist to make art more communicative and accessible? Is participatory art, which tries to include a broad range of practices where people collaborate with skilled artists to make or interpret art, changing usual artistic practices? Could it be the ground for more innovative art? Can these kinds of projects be more easily accepted as mild social critique by society, instead of a more direct and radical political critique? Or is it simply grounds for receiving extra funds?
